“In an Alternative Universe, I Don’t Want to Live in the UK” is a solo performance created and performed by Hong Kong musician and actress Catherine Li.
Thisshow blends actor musicianship with autobiographical and documentary theatre, presenting the journey of a reluctant Hongkonger relocating to the UK. It intersects with broader discussions about immigration and political repression on a geopolitical scale.
About the Artist:
Catherine Li is an artivist, musician and model, who is now residing in the UK, and is currently suffering from homesickness. She trained at Rose Bruford College (MA Actor Musicianship) in 2023 and at King’s College London (MA in Theatre & Performance Studies) in 2020, and BA (English) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2018.
Catherine's past works focus on freedom and human rights. Her song cover of “Glory to Hong Kong”, a protest anthem of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement, has received 1M views on YouTube and is on the Hong Kong government’s banned list of songs. Since 2019, she has been regularly creating performances to raise awareness for Hong Kong and campaigning to advocate for the rights of the UK-Hong Kong diaspora, which now has a population of near 170,000 across the UK.
